Ballon d'Or

I read the sports quickie last weekend. It seems Chelsea hitman Didier Drogba stated that he deserved to win the European Footballer of the Year award ahead of Man.United's Cristiano Ronaldo and AC Milan's Kaka.

OK, so he scored 20 goals last season, but it took him awhile to get into gear. When he first arrived in 2004-05 from French outfit Marseille, much was expected from him. Slapped with a price tag of 24 million pounds, he was Chelsea's record signing before Essien & Shevchenko arrived.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the reasons why Man.United was in such great form last season & managed to regain their Premiership crown from Chelsea. His twinkling feet have bamboozled many defenders & left spectators in awe. However, that was not the case when he first made his debut against Bolton as a sub in the 60th minute in the 2003-04 season, nobody had heard of him. Everybody wondered whether his name would reflect his skills, much more he had the number '7' on his shirt.

I remember the moment clearly, as soon as Ronaldo came on his step-overs wrong-footed Bolton's defenders & his blistering pace was shocking that the only way to stop him, was to take him down, which they did & United won a penalty for that.

Over the years, Ronaldo was criticized for having the tendency to fall down easily whenever tackled. That may be true, but he has matured tremendously since then, and his all around play has improved under the guidance of Ferguson & the coaching techniques of Carlos Queiroz. Plus his goal count has been steadly climbing since his arrival. Last season he got 23 goals in total, the season before that he netted a dozen.

Brazilian Kaka is another exciting player to watch. His ability to run & dribble around defenders with such grace is a sight many footie fans considered magical.

Last season in the Champions League, when AC Milan came to Old Trafford, Kaka single handedly out played United's defence & scored 2 precious away goals. Since Shevchenko's departure to Chelsea, Kaka is now the focal point of attack for his team.

So who deserves the Ballon d' Or award?

We will know soon enough. Man.United have 5 players (Ronaldo, Rooney, Scholes, Giggs & Tevez) shortlisted for the award and I hope one of Fergie's Fledging's would win it & especially not a certain Blues player.

i agree that it's between ronaldo & kaka.

Drogba just wants to piggyback, I believe he still hasn't earned that right to win it yet.
